On July 30, the Bellingham Cruise Terminal transformed into a secret garden, not simply through beautiful greenery, glowing lights, and flowers, but through something far more meaningful: a community united around the belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive.
At FuturesNW's Secret Garden Gala, educators, business leaders, volunteers, donors, students, and community partners gathered with a shared purpose. Together, they celebrated possibility, invested in the next generation, and demonstrated what can happen when an entire community chooses to walk alongside its students.
As guests arrived, they were welcomed by music from violinist Kaylee Blair and cellist Zander Tran. Throughout the evening, FuturesNW Executive Director Ashley DeLatour reflected on both the accomplishments and challenges the organization has faced this year. Despite significant statewide funding reductions and ongoing uncertainty, one thing has remained constant: FuturesNW's unwavering commitment to helping students navigate pathways to college, careers, and brighter futures.
Because behind every statistic is a student: A first-generation college applicant wondering if they belong, a family trying to understand financial aid for the first time, or a young person searching for someone who believes in them before they fully believe in themselves. These are the stories that drive FuturesNW's work every day.
One of the evening's most moving moments came as community partners shared how FuturesNW has impacted students across Northwest Washington. Educators spoke about young people who discovered career possibilities they had never imagined, found the confidence to pursue higher education, and realized they were not alone on their journey.
Throughout dinner, guests could donate to fund dorm baskets filled with everyday essentials for students who have experienced foster care or homelessness as they prepare to begin college. Alongside their donations, guests wrote heartfelt notes of encouragement for students they may never meet.
The evening also celebrated remarkable individuals whose dedication has strengthened educational opportunity throughout our community. Kathleen Solomon received the “Generations of Impact Award,” recognizing a lifetime of service and leadership that continues to inspire others. Legacy Awards honored Karina Avila, Victor Ayon, and Lizbeth Gaspar Gonzalez for their lasting contributions to students and the FuturesNW mission. Peer Leadership Awards recognized Kalea Camacho and Allie Grise, whose leadership reminds us that young people are not only the future, they are already creating positive change today.
As the evening continued, laughter filled the room during the always-anticipated Dessert Dash. Friendly competition quickly gave way to celebration as tables raced to claim beautifully crafted desserts.
During the “Fund the Future” paddle raise, guests were invited to imagine what becomes possible when every student has someone helping them navigate financial aid, discover career pathways, explore college options, and believe in their own potential. One by one, supporters raised their paddles. It represented a community choosing to invest in futures that may otherwise never have the chance to bloom.
This evening was only possible because our community came together in incredible ways. Guests enjoyed beer generously provided by Stones Throw Brewery and desserts donated by Pure Bliss, L&L Bakery, and Chuckanut Bakers, along with a delicious meal prepared by Crave Catering, as well as a beautiful garden-inspired atmosphere made possible by partners like Ferny's Nursery and Cranberry Sky Heirloom Rentals.
A heartfelt thank you also goes to Spark Museum, Lydia Place, Whatcom Center for Early Learning, and Mercy Housing for generously allowing us to borrow décor and miscellaneous supplies for the evening.
Last but certainly not least, a special shoutout to Sarah Reidt Photography for generously donating her time and talent to capture the evening and all of the special moments that made the Gala so memorable.
Although the Secret Garden Gala has come to a close, our mission continues. Every day, FuturesNW works alongside students as they navigate financial aid, explore career pathways, and take the next steps toward their futures. If the stories shared throughout the evening inspired you, we invite you to continue investing in the next generation by making a gift or becoming a monthly donor.
